Day 66 - PCT 2024

Trail miles hiked: 0

Ascent: 0

Descent: 0

The cabin life is a fun life. I would love a cottage. A little house on a lake somewhere. That is the dream. I slept great. Not long enough but it never is.

Today turned into an expected zero. A welcomed zero! Wade needed to head into Medford to do a Costco run and offered to drive me to REI to get a new sleeping pad. I had to jump at the opportunity because I’m unsure when I’ll have another chance. A good sleep is priceless out here.

He dropped Tina and Debbie off at the trailhead so they can continue their sobo section and Krista, Wade and I made the drive into Medford. Wade asked Krista to drive so we commandeered the car and had a blast!

We gassed up at the Costco fuel bar. Oregon used to be entirely full service but is gradually converting to self-serve. It was interesting having a gas attendant fill us up at a Costco! Such a no-frills gas station with full service, ha! And then we walked around the Costco trying all the samples and enjoying civilization.

Goodbye Thinlight and hello Z Lite! I also purchased a new Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite which is lighter than my old Xtherm but has a 4.3 R rating so I should hopefully be warm enough during the summer months. I’ll give it a whirl. I shipped my old pad home so I can sort out the leak later. They’re far too expensive to just toss out but getting a new pad was the right call in this situation. So glad Staples was open on a Sunday to ship UPS from!

We grabbed a quick lunch from In-N-Out Burger and I’m in disbelief over the prices! Canada is so expensive. We were hoping to get Chick-fil-A but it’s closed on Sundays! Gack!

The 3 of us decided to camp out at Klum Landing Campground, just 0.2 miles off the PCT. We ended up yellow blazing to the camp, driving instead of hiking.

Just a few miles down the road from Hyatt Lake. We lit a fire, cooked some steaks in a hot cast iron pan over the fire and had a relaxing evening looking out at the lake and stargazing. A fellow PCT hiker showed up so we invited him to join us at our campsite. His name is Vincent and a section hiker from Germany.

Couldn’t have asked for a better day!
